San Andrea Middle School raises funds for literacy project

Fr Vince Magri SJ, director of the Paulo Freire Institute in Żejtun, this morning received a donation towards the 'iċ-Ċavetta' literacy project from pupils at San Andrea School, Imselliet.

The children participated in a readathon, an initiative whereby they collected a donation for every book they read over the past months. The money collected will go towards a project which aims to help 1000 vulnerable Maltese adults overcome illiteracy.

The project will cost almost €30,000, due to the need to re-print a series of textbooks and workbooks, flash cards, dvds, upgrade of software and hardware and other facilities in the classroom at the Paulo Friere Institute, as well as training of trainers.

Besides other services, the Paulo Freire Institute offers literacy training to particularly vulnerable adults and young people, as well as training and supply of resources to several other local NGO's for the same purpose.
