COVID19 EMERGENCY APPEAL: HELP JRS SUPPORT REFUGEES AFFECTED BY THE PANDEMIC

The current health crisis, experienced on both a global and national level, is posing a challenge to many, as various sectors of society increasingly find themselves struggling in the face of growing health concerns, economic uncertainty, and limited access to basic needs.

Refugees and forced migrants in Malta too have been hard hit by the economic fallout of the pandemic. Many have lost their jobs or suffered a significant drop in their income, which makes it very difficult for them to pay rent and put food on the table. In this context, those who, like victims of trafficking and people granted Temporary Humanitarian Protection, are not entitled to social benefits, although they live, work and pay taxes here, face a real risk of destitution.

Through our work at the Jesuit Refugee Service Malta, we are constantly in contact with some of the most vulnerable individuals in society, many of whom were already struggling to survive before the pandemic. Many show remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, but they are now burdened with the very real probability of being unable to meet their most basic needs. Others are at particular risk because of underlying health conditions, especially if they live in places where it is very difficult for them to practise social isolation.

JRS Malta supports vulnerable individuals and families in the community who are unable to access financial support from the state, by facilitating access to medications, basic accommodation, necessities for babies and children, and emergency living expenses.

We cannot do this without your support. Please help us ensure that people’s most basic needs are adequately met in these challenging times, so that they can live with the dignity they deserve.
