for the post of Lawyer within JRS Malta


JRS Malta is seeking to recruit a LAWYER on a one-year definite term contract, with the possibility of renewal, to work with asylum seekers and immigrants in Malta.


Terms and conditions

This a full-time position. The selected candidate will be offered a one year definite contract, with the possibility of renewal. Salary offered will be commensurate to experience.



Applicants must:

→    Be in possession of a Doctor of Laws/Master of Laws, or a comparable qualification which is equivalent to Level 7 in the Malta Qualifications Framework

→    Have a basic knowledge of Refugee Law and Human Rights Law

→    Have an excellent command of written and spoken English

→    Be able to work independently and take initiative within a fast paced environment

→    Have good writing skills

→    Be flexible, able to communicate effectively, and willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team

→    Be willing to work with and for people from diverse cultures 

→     Be of good moral character and demonstrate a sound work ethic


The following will be considered an asset:

→    The ability to understand, write and speak Maltese fluently

→    Knowledge of other relevant languages, such as French and Arabic

→    Previous experience working in the refugee/humanitarian field

→    A warrant to practice in the local courts 

→    Driving licence and own transport


Job description

Prospective candidates should be aware that the post involves a significant amount of outreach in open and closed centres and client contact. It requires a willingness to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 

The selected candidate will be expected to:

  1. Provide information and legal advice to migrants and asylum seekers on integration and protection related issues, both in the office as well as in detention or open centres.
  2. Provide legal assistance and representation in individual cases (under supervision if not warranted).
  3. Conduct outreach in detention and reception centres with other members of the JRS Malta team.
  4. Serve as a point of contact for migrants and asylum seekers and receive and respond to requests for information or assistance whether in the centres or as part of JRS’ drop in service.
  5. Work collaboratively with other members of the JRS team to ensure that, as far as possible, a holistic service is provided to each client.
  6. Identify asylum seekers and migrants who are in a particularly vulnerable situation, or who are otherwise in need of services and/or support.
  7. Maintain updated records of all services provided and assist with project-related tasks and activities, including reporting, as necessary. 
  8. Undertake any other tasks that may be necessary.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview and may also be required to undertake a number of tasks, which could include spending a number of hours in the office or accompanying member of the team on outreach, in order to better understand the nature of the work involved, before a final decision is taken.
